Chief Fire Officer Warns Against Public Negligence as Fire Ravages Timber Market in Accra

A gigantic fire outbreak has destroyed parts of the Timber Market in Accra, and there are strong appeals from Ghana's Chief Fire Officer for an end to public complacency and disregard for safety measures.

Fire Outbreak at Timber Market

Witnesses reported the fire erupting late at night, rapidly consuming timber buildings and timber-filled shops with other extremely flammable materials. Firefighters responded to the blaze, combating the blazes for several hours before they were able to get things under control.

Chief Fire Officer Issues Warning

Following the incident, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Chief Fire Officer expressed concern that market fires have become common occurrences and that most of these are due to negligence. He appealed to the public and traders in particular to be very serious about fire safety precautions.

"We must not risk losing lives and property due to carelessness. Every individual and business operator must ensure adequate fire safety precautions to prevent such tragedies," stated the Chief Fire Officer.

Losses and Impact

Several properties and shops were destroyed by the blaze, with traders tallying colossal monetary losses. Despite no casualties being reported, some individuals sustained minor injuries as they attempted to retrieve their products.

Call for Stronger Fire Safety Culture

The GNFS has once more appealed to the public to:

•Decline illegal electrical connections.

•Switch off all electric appliances after work.

•Keep combustible materials in position.

•Ensure fire extinguishers are available in workshops and shops.

The Accra Timber Market fire is yet another sour reminder of the dangers of complacency and lack of safety measures. The authorities have pledged to increase education and enforcement to prevent future accidents.
