Monday, September 22, 2025, has been declared a public holiday by the Ministry of the Interior to mark this year's Founder's Day.
The birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah is on Sunday, September 21. Statutory holidays, as provided by law, that fall on a weekend can be prescribed by the President to be worked on the following Monday.
In a Minister for the Interior press statement signed by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the ministry stated that President John Dramani Mahama, by Executive Instrument, directed that the holiday be observed throughout the country in accordance with the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, as amended.
The change occurs in the aftermath of 2025 amendment to the Act, which revamped how public holidays are shifted. Through the amendment, holidays that fall on a Saturday or Sunday are moved to the following Monday.
Parliament also amended the country's holiday calendar earlier this year. The amendments restored July 1 as Republic Day, introduced a new "Shaqq Day" after Eid-ul-Fitr, abolished August 4 as Founders' Day, and restored September 21, Nkrumah's birthday, as Founder's Day.
Nkrumah's birthday returns as Founder's Day, this Sunday holiday moved to Monday
