Recent analysis of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results indicates persistent performance challenges in core subjects, particularly Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies, alongside uneven outcomes across regions and school categories.
While there were marginal improvements in certain subject areas, overall performance patterns reveal systemic gaps in instructional quality, examination preparedness, learning resources and supervision.
The 2025 results underscore the urgent need for a coordinated and evidence-based intervention strategy to enhance student achievement nationwide.
Call
In light of this, we respectfully call on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to publicly outline the comprehensive measures being implemented to ensure significantly improved performance in WASSCE 2026.
Specifically, we seek clarity on the following strategic areas:
i) Curriculum implementation and coverage
What mechanisms are in place to ensure timely and complete syllabus coverage across all senior high schools?
▪ How is curriculum supervision being strengthened to guarantee instructional fidelity?
ii). Teacher capacity and professional development
▪ What targeted in-service training programmes are being deployed, particularly for core subject teachers?
Is there a structured remediation plan for schools with consistently poor outcomes?
iii). Student academic support systems
Are there national or regional remedial interventions for final-year students in high risk subjects?
What structured mock examination frameworks are being introduced to improve examination readiness?
iv) Monitoring, supervision and accountability
▪ What performance monitoring indicators have been adopted for SHS heads and subject teachers?
How will district and regional directors be held accountable for improvements?
v) Teaching and learning resources
What measures are being taken to ensure equitable distribution of textbooks, laboratory equipment, ICT tools and past examination materials?
vi) Data-driven interventions
How are 2025 WASSCE performance analytics being used to guide targeted policy and resource allocation for 2026?
vii). Student welfare and motivation
What psychosocial, guidance and counseling mechanisms are being strengthened to improve student focus and performance?
Improving WASSCE outcomes is not merely about examination statistics; it is a matter of national human capital development.
Sustainable academic improvement requires proactive planning, measurable targets, transparent reporting and coordinated implementation across all levels of the education system.
We, therefore, urge the ministry and the Ghana Education Service to provide a detailed public action plan outlining timelines, measurable performance benchmarks and monitoring frameworks for WASSCE 2026.
The academic future of Ghanaian students depends on decisive and accountable leadership.
