The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, began screening people who want to contest for the party's flagbearer for the presidential primaries slated for January 31, 2026.
The exercise is underway at the party secretariat in Adabraka, Accra, under the direction of a committee chaired by Dr. Addo Kufuor.
The screening started with the vetting of erstwhile NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, and will be concluded today with the other five applicants.
They are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong, and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Then comes the nomination period, which began last July and closed last August 28, wherein all five candidates were able to submit their forms before the deadline.
The presidential primary itself will be on January 31, 2026. In the event that no candidate gets a majority, the first two candidates will go into a run-off on February 14, 2026.
Party leadership is appealing to supporters and candidates to campaign in a clean and civil manner as NPP prepares for what could be a closely contested contest.
