The Chief of Staff to the Presidency, Julius Debrah, has commended the role played by the media and civil society organizations in assisting to secure Ghana's democracy.
We are proud of our vibrant civil society, our stubborn media and our unshakeable determination to settle political disputes through talk and court proceedings," he said, continuing to state that "this, we believe, is what makes a democracy endure and thrive."
Democracy dialogue
Mr Debrah spoke to the last session of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation's Democracy Dialogue 2025 in Accra.
The event, which lasted only one day and was officially organized by President John Dramani Mahama, was themed: "Why Democracies Die".
The Dialogue was attended by such high-profiled individuals as former Presidents of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo, and Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese.
Autonomy
Mr Debrah stressed the need to build the capacity and autonomy of electoral bodies, judiciaries and anti-corruption agencies, free from political influence.
They must pledge to respect their term limits, constitutional promises and the integrity of clean elections even when painful to do so, he stated.
"A living, responsible and fearless media is instrumental to holding those in office to account, and promoting healthy public debate," he added.
