Seek GLC approval before operating – Acting CJ to Ghana Law Society

Acting Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, urged the young Ghana Law Society to apply for official licensure and approval from the General Legal Council (GLC) as part of its strategy to become a professional organization.

The Ghana Law Society has filed a suit with the Supreme Court to overturn the long time monopoly of the Ghana Bar Association as the sole professional association of lawyers in Ghana.

At a meeting with members of the Ghana Law Society in Accra on Thursday, September 25, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie urged adhering to strict legal procedures.

"To us, you must have a General Legal Council certificate. So, when, in your address, you are saying you will make a representation to the General Legal Council for recognition and licensure, then it will be in the right direction. Because all that we care about at the General Legal Council is that you will have our license," he added.

The Supreme Court case, if successful, can redefine the legal profession in Ghana through the potential of having multiple professional associations.
