Leaking, overloaded boat caused Volta lake disaster – Krachi West MCE

Krachi West Municipal Chief Executive, Prosper Addo, has revealed that preliminary investigations into the Volta Lake boat disaster identify a leaking boat, overloading, and the absence of life jackets as the main causes of the accident.

He explained that the ship which was involved in the accident was not fit for transportation, had exceeded its capacity, and had loaded passengers without life jackets — elements which cumulatively affect the scale of the incident.

"Investigations that are ongoing, only three issues have actually arisen," said Mr Addo. "One is regarding the boat even not being suitable because it's leaking. The second one is regarding overloading. The boat has overloaded more than what it can carry. And then the third one is regarding all the individuals on board the boat not wearing life jackets."

He further disclosed that Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is heading to make condolences and provide government relief to the bereaved families.

"The Vice President is indeed coming to visit us here to console the families. She's also bringing with her some relief items which would be given to the bereaved families as well as those who actually survived the accident. So, we are currently at Okume Community," he said.

The tragic accident, which occurred on October 11, claimed the lives of 16 people, including an 11-year-old boy who was reportedly piloting the canoe.
