Madagascar army colonel says military has taken charge of nation

One of Madagascar's army colonels, who led a mutiny of troops who defected to join anti-government Gen Z protesters, Tuesday announced that the military took over the African island nation, following President Andry Rajoelina fleeing the country.

"We have taken the power," said Colonel Michael Randrianirina to national radio, observing that the military was dissolving all institutions save the lower house of parliament, which impeached Rajoelina just moments before he issued his statement.
