Lawyers for Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund, have withdrawn from the case.
This was made known by Justice Kocuvie-Tay, chairperson of the Sky Train trial.
Prof Ameyaw Akumfi and former GIIF CEO Solomon Asamoah have been indicted on various counts, including causing state financial loss for their roles in the flopped Accra Sky Train Project.
On Monday, October 13, when the case was called, Prof Ameyaw Akumfi told the court that his lawyer would not be present.
After the judge questioned him, he clarified that there was a miscommunication between himself and his lawyers, which he further indicated he was hopeful would be resolved soon.
But Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay noted that the court had also received a letter from the lawyers indicating withdrawal of services.
"He has written a letter he's no longer your lawyer. He's human being so he can change his heart. Be that as it may you can hire the services of another," she advised.
The case was adjourned to Monday October 20 following Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem Sai indicating that the defence counsel had made an application which had to be raised.
On the last adjourned date, the defence lawyers made a motion which would compel the prosecution to disclose documents that they argued were minutes of board and committee meetings—bear exculpatory information necessary to refute the prosecution's claim that the investment was not authorisationed.
The prosecution objected to the motion, citing there were no such documents in their possession or custody.
The application was later dismissed by the court.
The defence attorneys have also raised objections against the High Court order and filed an application to stay proceedings.
